How can we address the overwhelming impacts of technology on society? Can we resist
the potential transformation of our autonomy and thought processes? How can we preserve our democracies?
Asma Mhalla analyzes the hybrid challenges posed by AI and tech to
human sovereignty and democracy. In her essay Technopolitique, she explores the political and economic consolidation of power in tech giants. She
underscores "Big Tech"'s function in surveillance, social control, geopolitics, and what she defines as "the militarization of civil society." She emphasizes the
need to educate citizens, before they become soldiers of a "cyber social order." She questions the influence of social media, the powerplays between "Big State" and
"Big Tech," the role of large companies such as Starlink or Amazon in geopolitical conflicts, as well as on the electoral process in the United States. She believes in
the urgent need to design new policies and political structures to secure our democracies, redefine societal norms and governance.
Etienne Klein encourages us to bridge intellectual silos and the limitations of our cognitive frameworks. To
him, philosophical reflections are relevant to the crises at hand. He stresses the difference between being intelligent and mimicking intelligence as AI does. In his
book
Courts-Circuits, he invites us to
provoke "short-circuits" in our brain between disparate fields. We need these sparks to grasp, to anticipate and to rise to the serious ethical, political and social challenges posed
by exponential technological advances. Imagination, intuition and creativity are unique human attributes which allow us to envision concepts which are both abstract and concrete, such
as time and space. Connections exist between Einstein and the Rolling Stones, physics, music, maths, poetry, art... There are ways out of the "matrix."
We look forward to welcoming you to this stimulating discussion!
Note: The talks will be in
French
The fireside-chat will be followed by a Q&A session,
a Cocktail Reception and a Book Signing
by Asma Mhalla of her essay Technopolitique: Comment la technologie fait de nous des soldats (Ed. le Seuil)
and by Etienne Klein of his latest book Courts-Circuits(Ed. Gallimard).
